“Penetrating The Darkness” Prayers Needed for 4th of July Weekend

Strategic English Camp in Thailand – July 1-3, 2011

God is using English in mighty ways to reach the hearts of young people in one of the most needy, yet fascinating places in the world – Northern Thailand. In just a few hours (since it is already Friday morning in Thailand), Grace Language School will begin a 3 day English camp where we will have lots of fun, make lots of new friends, and build bridges to the hearts of lost people. We have a great team from Florence, Mississippi here to help us as well as 2 Summer Volunteer Missionaries from Florecne, MS as well 2 Summer Volunteers Missionaries from my hometown of Tuscaloosa, AL. They have been busy all week getting ready for this very important weekend. In just a couple of hours from now, we will be registering somewhere between 40 to 60 high school and university students for this camp.

Pray for a special touch from God. Pray for the team to love these campers like Jesus loves them. Pray that God would help them to be His hands and His feet. Pray for these campers that their eyes and hearts will be opened to the message of our great and mighty Savior and King. We have already seen other students give their hearts to Jesus over the past couple of months and we are seeing God to do some amazing things.
Please also pray that God would send us laborers to help in the fields to follow up with these precious people. We are in desperate need of two people who would commit for 2 years to come and serve with us as teachers at Grace Language School and help us follow up and really make a long term impact in this part of the world.

Your Servant to the Nations in and around Northern Thailand,

Michael

NTIM Update From Kara Davis - June 30, 2011

So I realized I haven’t written an update since….oh maybe…February?!  Wow time has flown by!  So here is what you’ve missed over the past few months, what’s coming up next, and what’s going on with me now! (Don’t be discouraged by how long this is – it’s worth the read!)

March
In March, we had two Children’s English Camps for the many children’s homes that attend our church as well as the children in the community.  The camp was called  “Animal Kingdom” and we used stories in the Bible to talk about different animals.  I was the director of both camps.  It was the first time for me to ever be part of an English camp let alone be in charge of one!  And I sure learned a lot!  We were very grateful for the mission team from Tuscaloosa, Alabama that came out for the second camp!  They taught the workstations and helped out in many other ways!  Thank you for all you did!

April
In April, the children from Baan Oon Rak went home for the summer, so I missed them very much!  But my dad and brother came to visit and surprised me by bringing one of my best friends with them!  I had a week off work for the Songkran Festival (largest water fight in the world – all of Thailand throws water at each other for at least 3 days!), so the four of us had a lot of fun adventures together.  One of my favorite things we did was go visit the BOR girls in their village.  It was the first time for me to visit their village and see where they come from.  The village is about a three hour drive from Chiang Rai and is tucked away high up in the mountains.  There are dirt roads, bamboo shacks, and extreme poverty.  Poverty is one of the factors that puts children at risk of being sold into sex trafficking.  BOR, as well as many other children’s homes, is set up to prevent sex trafficking and give these precious children a better home and education.

A few days after my family left, Betsie came.  Betsie is 15-years-old from Mississippi.  She came to volunteer with our church and language school for two months.  She blessed us in many ways!

At the end of April, one of our Grace Language School students, Yam, gave her life to Christ!!  Yam just graduated from Chiang Rai Rajabaht University.  She continues to study at GLS in Level 6.  She regularly attends our church on Sunday mornings as well as the youth and college cell groups on Friday nights.  She also studies Bible every week with one of our Baan Athitaan church staff members, Pii Ja.  Yam is very excited about learning more about God and what it means to be a follower of Christ.  Please keep her in your prayers as she grows in her faith.

May
The first Saturday in May, the BOR girls came back from their summer break!  What I thought would be a day of celebration turned into a day of fear.  Three of the girls did not come back with the rest, and no one could contact their families.  That afternoon a group of us drove to the village and talked to neighbors trying to find out why the girls did not come back.  We were told that one girl was in Burma with her family and two of the girls were with family in a different village.  We ran out of daylight and had to return home that night and ventured out again for a second trip a few days later.  The second trip was a success and we found the two girls that were in the other village.  Praise God!  They were safe with their mom whose phone was broken, which is why no one could contact her and she did not have the money to take the girls to Chiang Rai.  The girls came back with us that afternoon and are doing fine at BOR.  The third girl who did not come back stayed in Burma with her family.  They chose to proceed with Burmese citizenship, which makes it difficult for her to live in Thailand.  Please keep her in your prayers that she is safe, well, and happy.

At the end of May, Michael Johnson and his son, Josh, left for the states to see Michael and Hope’s oldest daughter, Jessica, graduate from college.  Hope, Liz, and Caleb stayed in Thailand to watch Liz graduate from high school.  Michael and his family will be in the states for the summer, so please pray for their time together and for our staff while they are gone.

I was also able to go on a weekend roadtrip to Chiang Mai with Pii Ja at the end of May.  We went to visit Ao, a good friend and active church member.  Ao recently moved to Chiang Mai to attend college.  Pii Ja and I went to help her find a church and get connected with other Christians.  God had His hand all over the trip and prepared everything for us.  We attended a church Sunday morning and met several Christians, including college students.  They told us about a ministry called “The Light” that meets at a coffee shop across the street from Ao’s university.  We went Sunday night and worshipped, listened to the speaker, and talked and prayed in small groups with many believers Ao’s age.  It was very encouraging to know Ao has so many other believers surrounding her.  Please pray for her as she adjusts to college life and that she will be a light to her campus.

June
On the 3rd, a group from our church along with a team from the states went on a “prayer ride” to Huay Ku village.  They took motorbikes up through the mountains and stopped and prayed at villages and for churches along the way.  In Huay Ku, they prayed with the pastor and his family and encouraged them in the work they are doing.

We had our annual Church Activity Fun Day on the 4th.  Many church members (mainly the youth) came and competed in games, ate a lot of great food, and fellowshipped together.  It was a great day!

The rest of the Johnson family left for the states to spend time with family and get Liz settled in at college.  While they are gone I am housesitting/dogsitting for them J.  I love staying in a house (vs. living at the church), but I do not like living alone!  I get scared at night, so pray for my sanity haha!

We are halfway through Jon’s women’s self-defense class.  It is going great!  We are learning a lot from the training and the devotion time, and many young women (Thais and Westerners) attend regularly.

Betsie left with her mom, and my friends, Lindsay and Jackie, also returned to the states.  Lindsay and Jackie got here around the same time I did.  They were volunteer teachers at the Family Learning Center and Lindsay also taught for us at GLS.  We will miss all of them very much!

Two teams of four arrived on the 15th.  One team was here to help with our HIV/Aids ministry.  The other team is here for 6 weeks as summer volunteers and we will put them to work in many ways!  We have another team arriving today (the 28th).  We are so blessed so many people have been called to work with us!

We learned on the 16th that one of our team member’s, Chrissy Espy, brother passed away.  Please keep Chrissy, Jon, CyCy, and the rest of Chrissy’s family in your prayers as they go through this difficult time.   They return from the states on the 29th.

What’s next?

July 1-3 we have an English Camp for youth and college students ages 15-22.   It is an overnight camp and the theme is “American Teen Sports.”  The team from Mississippi is teaching the workstations and we are getting very excited about it!  Pii Jay and I are in charge of the camp, so please pray for us, as we make sure everything comes together!

As for me…
I’ve been here 10 months now!  Can you believe it?  I continue to teach Level 4 English at GLS.  I work in the church office, organize the English-speaking Children’s Church, as well as other responsibilities that come up.  I go every Saturday to Baan Oon Rak and spend time with the children.  Many of you know this is where my heart is and I came to Thailand with plans of moving in at BOR after 6 months of living here; however, sometimes God’s plans are not our own.  Because of different circumstances, we feel like this is not the right decision for me right now, and we are praying about other possibilities.  Please pray for God’s guidance and that He would lead me in the right direction.  Also, please keep all of us in Northern Thailand in your prayers as we try to reach people for Christ.

In Christ,
Kara

UPDATE ON URGENT NEED FOR JOHNSON FAMILY - May 18, 2011

We serve an awesome God who knows the very number of hairs on our heads and cares for the very details of our lives. As I sit here in Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with my son Joshua and write this update, my heart is overwhelmed with many emotions and thoughts.

I received word yesterday that one of our friends and supporters in this ministry is in the process of donating enough miles to purchase one of the remaining 3 airline tickets that are needed for the rest of my family to make the loooong trip this way. I also received word yesterday that a couple of special donations came in that will cover the other airline tickets that are needed. We are so grateful to God and to the precious friends and supporters God has surrounded us with. It is a great joy to serve both our Lord Jesus and to serve you in this partnership of taking the gospel and love of Jesus into the heart of Northern Thailand. We are willing to go, willing to serve, and willing to live among these people that we have come to know and love but we cannot do it alone. We need our Lord Jesus and we need you, each of you. We need your love. We need your encouragement. We need your financial support. We need your prayers.

Together, our Lord is using our partnership to impact a part of the world that has been in deep darkness for thousands of years and He is building HIS CHURCH and the gates of hell will not stand against it. No doubt, the enemy has not been happy with the success of the gospel and has attempted to create problems and disharmony on the field in the past, but greater is He that is in us that he that is in the world.

We will give an update on the work at a later time but today we just felt compelled to say a heart-felt thank you to all of you for your love and partnership with us in this great ministry of bringing the love and message of the gospel to millions living in the heart of Asia and the 10-40 Window of Asia.

We love you and are happy to serve the Lord with you in this great cause for Christ.

Your Servants to the Nations in and around Northern Thailand,

Michael for all

URGENT NEED: Send the Johnson Family on Furlough and back to Thailand

My family and I have been serving the Lord in Thailand over 12 years now and we have planned our “Furlough” times around our children’s graduation from High school. However, this year is a very special year in that our oldest daughter Jessica is graduating from Union University on May 21, 2011 in Jackson, TN and our second daughter Liz is graduating from Chiang Rai International Christian School on May 28, 2011. As such, Joshua and I are planning to leave for America to celebrate Jessica’s graduation in the middle of May and Hope, Liz and Caleb are planning to follow on to America after they have celebrated Liz’s graduation.

We have been praying and seeking God for the funds for our family to go on Furlough and then to return to the field the end of August 2011. This truly is a place where the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few and we wanted to let friends and supporters know about this very special urgent need. It will take an estimated $7,100  just in airfare to get our family to the US and have a return ticket to Thailand waiting for 4 of us for August. We will also be in need of a vehicle and housing so please join us in praying for God to open doors in those areas as well. However, this project is specifically for airfare travel costs to get the Johnson family to America and then return to Thailand at the end of August 2011.

For those of you who do not know our family very well, we came to Thailand in January 1999 with a very clear call and vision to plant a community, purpose driven type church in an urban setting. God has given us great favor and with the help, prayers, and support of God’s people, we have been able to plant a church called Baan Athitaan Church in Northern Thailand in the middle of hundreds of unreached people groups.

This church began in our home shortly after we moved to Chiang Rai and opened up an English language school over 10 years ago after we spent 2 years in Bangkok in language study. I now serve as the Senior Pastor of this community church that is made up of over 20 different people groups and is truly making disciples of all the nations. I also serve as the Director of Grace Language School where we are using teaching English as a strategic way to build relationships in the community and share the love and message of Jesus to thousands of people. I also serve as the Field Director and Vice President of NTIM. Hope also serves as an English Teacher at Mae Fah Luang University where she invests her life in students who will be some of the future leaders in this country.

If you would like to make a donation to go toward the Johnson family, please send your checks or money orders payable to NTIM at the address below. If you would rather give on line, please go to our website at www.gontim.org

"A Taste of Thailand" is coming soon to Alabama & Mississippi - Updated Feb 2, 2011

Please consider this an invitation to a night of inspiration and reflection of how God is penetrating Thailand’s Darkness. We will begin the night with a meal followed by several powerful testimonies of God’s amazing power to build His church even in some of the darkest places in the world. Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”

We will have several special guests with us including two directly from the field, Michael Johnson who is NTIM’s VP and Field Director as well as Phuangphet Sombatjaruenkit, better known as Phet, who is one of our Thai national leaders in the ministry.

The only thing you need to bring is an empty stomach, an open heart and a small donation to help offset some of the cost for our meal. Please help us know how many meals to prepare for by sending Michael a short email confirmation of how many people will be coming in your party and to which location. Michael’s email is: michael@gontim.org

Painting With Love From Singapore

Some paint brushes and a few gallons of paint and a lot of love… that could describe the mission work that took place here a Grace Language School in December.

A mission team from Singapore came to serve with us for 10 days. During that time one of the main tasks that they headed up was the painting of the classrooms at Grace Language School.

Over the years the paint on the classroom walls had become, like any other well used area, worn. The team, along with the staff, took the challenge to paint these 8 classrooms in 2 days. This was not an easy task, but the team went at it with full force. They accomplished their goal with time to spare.

Now, this may not seem like a flashy or glamorous mission; however, that is exactly what made this task so amazing. This seemingly mundane action of painting a room is something that could easily be over looked. Yet, the way the team put everything they had into it reminded me that “whatever we do, do unto the Lord”.

So many times we as Christians overlook the small things that are so vitally important to the work of the Lord. Whether it’s painting a room or taking out the trash or whatever other small seemingly insignificant mission God has given you. Like Matthew 10:42 says “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."

We never know what the smallest action did in the name of Jesus will accomplish. We thank God that this team from Singapore had a heart to truly serve no matter what the task. I pray that God will continue to show us the wonder in the things that we so often overlook.

Penetrating Thailand’s Darkness – Update December 9, 2010

The Christmas season seems to be the time of year when God chooses to move mightily in the hearts of people living here in the heart of Northern Thailand. One of our university students named Galong gave her heart to Jesus several months ago. She is being disciplined and learning how to share the love and message of Jesus and has been actively sharing her faith this Christmas season. God has given this young lady the opportunity to lead several other university students to faith in Jesus including two this past Friday. The Bible says that the angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner that repents and the Angels have been rejoicing and smiling over Thailand these past few weeks.

Like most of the ones we see give their hearts to Jesus, Galong is the first person in her entire family to become a believer in Jesus. At first her family was very upset with her decision but after seeing the changes that God has brought in her life they are beginning to warm up to the idea and it is with great joy that I will have the privilege of baptizing Galong along with 4 others this Sunday.

But that is not all. Many of you know one of our staff named Gae. Gae has served with us for 6 years now and heads up coordinating and leading our compassion ministries with special emphasis on our HIV/AIDS ministry. Gae was the first person in her entire family to become a believer as well. We have tried to be much more intentional with reaching out to the families of our staff and helping them to share their love and faith with their families. Yesterday, December 8, Gae drove over to the hospital in her village that we are working with regarding our HIV/AIDS ministry. After following up and visiting with those infected with HIV/AIDS, she went home to visit her mother for lunch and God opened her heart in a huge way and Gae had the privilege of leading her mother to the throne of grace. Wow. God is on the move in Northern Thailand and is using your prayers, your gifts, and your partnership to penetrate the darkness and change people’s lives.

BUT STILL THAT IS NOT ALL. Just as I finished writing the above paragraph, Gae walked into one of the classrooms where I was working and said, “Fluke wants to give his heart to Jesus.” Fluke is a high school student that has been one of our English students at Grace Language School for many years. Well, Gae and Fluke came into the classroom and we began to talk and ask and answer questions and it was clear that Fluke truly was ready to give his heart to Jesus so God gave me the chance to lead Him to the throne of our Lord Jesus. Wow. God truly is on the move.

For those of you who follow our ministry closely, you know well that we live in a part of the world where there has been Satanic strongholds keeping people in darkness for thousands of years. But God is bringing His love and His light into this part of the world. God is moving in a way that we have never seen before reaching down into families where there has never been even 1 Christian believer in the family and through the power of the gospel of our Lord Jesus, God is changing lives.

God is moving and we are pleading with you to keep praying and to keep giving. Finances these days are as tight as I have ever seen them and there is still so much to do. This is the time of year when we have dozens of Christmas programs to share the love of Jesus and our main Christmas event is next week and we are still very short on financial resources. We truly need your help.

Your Servants to the Nations in and around Northern Thailand,

Michael for the team
